Fountain Pen Day Giveaway

Fountain Pen Day falls on the first Friday of November. Guess what, that's this week! In honor of Fountain Pen Day and due to the fact that we have a few of our Karas Kustoms INKs back from the anodizer, we are giving one of them away. Plus we know everyone loves free stuff. On to the details.

We are giving away Karas Kustoms INK "Arizona Edition", red anodized with a copper section and clipless cap. This pen will be the first INK to leave the shop since we made design changes from the original run. To briefly go over the changes, here we go. We switched from a Schmidt #5 nib to a Bock #6 nib. This allows us to offer EF nibs as well as provide a high quality writing experience. The nib is semi-recessed in the section to give the pen its own aesthetic look and as an homage to some of the early recessed nibbed pens. We added copper and brass to the mix when we expanded from just using those materials on the grip sections to complete barrels and caps, so now you can get an INK that is completely copper to dazzle your friends and family. We changed the inner threads on the section to add some stability (it wasn't necessary but just ensure the section screws in nice and holds the converter in place a little better). Finally we are adding the clipless cap to these pens due to many people expressing a desire for that feature.

Three Runner Up prizes will be awarded randomly and will include Fountain Pen Day bookmarks, buttons and a Karas Kustoms notebook along with a mystery gift for each of the runner ups from our box of random giveaway items

So here's the lowdown on the giveaway. To enter you will need to post a comment below. In the comment tell us your favorite fountain pen, first fountain pen, or why you want to get into fountain pens. All entries will be assigned a number and the random number generator at www.random.org will be utilized to pick a winner. The winner will be chosen on November 9th, at 5pm Arizona time.

We will announce the winners on the blog as well as via the @karaspenco Instagram if you follow us there.

  1. I know this is going to sounds like a suck-up answer...but my black Ink with a shapeways clip is my favorite. The pen is nice, I like the heft and size of it, but the custom ground Crisp Cursive Italic nib is what keeps me coming back to that pen. It always gets the fancy new inks first and stays inked when I am purging because too many pens are inked.

  2. My first fountain pen was a Preppy, followed by a Pilot Metro, and then all hell broke loose.

  3. My first fountain pen, if I remember correctly, was some sort of Sheaffer student cartridge pen with a clear barrel -- now long, long, long gone.

  4. My first fountain pen,in my first lifetime was a Montblanc 146, which I lost. In my second fountain pen lifetime it was a Pelikan M600, in red of course. My favorite fountain pens is that beautiful Arizona Edition INK that you're giving to me on Friday–thank you ahead of time by the way. So nice of you guys!

  9. I love my Namisu Nexus with a Titanium Nib because the full Titanium Construction is really something beautiful, the flexy nib is always something for a special occasion and it is currently one of my two EDC fountain pens, the other one is a Vanishing Point.

  10. The first was a Lamy Safari. The current favorite is an Edison Pearlette with a Franklin-Christoph/Mike Masuyama medium cursive italic nib.

  11. My current favorite is my Newton Orville because if the sentimental value it holds.

  12. My first fountain was a POS I bought from Amazon, scratchy and didn't work well. I lost it within two weeks. I count a Pilot Metropolitan as my first real FP. My favorite FP is a KK Ink with an Mbacas medium CI.

  15. I love pens, but I have never got a fountain pen yet. I guess I have been biding my time. But now that my brother got one and let me use it I am sold. This would just make the commitment so easy.

  18. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Studio. My current favorite is tough to pick. My favorite modern is Pilot Metal Falcon. And my favorite vintage pen is a Eversharp Skyline with a flexible nib from the amazing Paul Bennett ;) But I don't have a KK INK yet, but one definitely needs to join my collection.

  19. Interestingly enough, my first fountain pen that I ever bought was the INK on the kickstarter campaign. It opened my eyes to such great things. My all time favorite pen though, is my 1945 Parker Vacumatic in green. I really like that you all have listened to your customers and made improvements on an already amazing pen.

  20. I find it almost impossible to choose a favourite pen - but I have a few that are in my 'top tier', that get more use than most. These include a Pilot Vanishing Point, a TWSBI 580, my Karas Kustoms INK... and a Diplomat Excellence A

Thanks for this giveaway - would love to have second KK pen!

  21. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Safari, but my favorite is probably the second one I ever got, which I received as a gift: Pilot Vanishing Point. My everyday carry is a gray Ink, though, and I can't wait to get my hands on the new style whether I'm lucky enough to win or not!

    ReplyDelete
  22. My favorite EDC fountain pen is my initial issue Fountain K (Schmidt nib). I have several custom ground #5 nibs for my INK, and I enjoy swapping them between the two pens. That said, I love the look of the new INK and will probably be adding one to me collection.

  23. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Safari but my favorite pen is my matte black vanishing point! Also, gimmie dat pen.

  24. I think my first fountain pen was probably a Pilot Varsity. Soon after I got an Aurora Idea and a Lamy AL-Star. Hard to pick a true all-time favorite, but currently I'm digging the TWSBI ECO, and surprising as it may sound - an orange Jinhao 159. I like the size and weight of these 159s, and you can't beat ~$5 price (delivered). The stock nibs can be made to be good, or other #6 nibs can be swapped. I also really like my INK rollerball (also on the larger, heavier side), but have been craving a fountain pen version for awhile, so I'm so glad that a) your making them again and b) the new version sounds even better than the first!

  25. My first fountain pen was a Pilot Metro F.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My first fountain pen was a red Shaffer drug store pen. My favorite is my Olive INK 29 with its lovely FCI nib. Thanks for being awesome, Karas.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So hard to pick a favorite pen so I'll just say my first, it was a platinum preppy! I was surprised by how well it wrote for a $4 pen, and I still use it till this day for harder to clean inks.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Current fav: Sailor 1911 Black Luster

    ReplyDelete
  29. Tough call on my favorite. I love my Franklin-Christoph 02 Clipless, but use my FountainK every day. My first is easy though. A beat up Lamy AL-Star gifted to me by my sister-in-law. It's still in my rotation and I often use it to test new inks as it is very reliable.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Vista with a LH nib. Still have it and occasionally ink it. Love my Fountain K in brass right now.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Logo, but so far, my favorite is the Pilot Metropolitan.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Never had fountain pen. Maybe it's time to have one, from a giveaway? Even better!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. My first was actually a Pilot Metropolitan, if you don't count the Varsity I had when I was 16. It doesn't see a lot of use, but was a worthy stepping stool. Thanks for the chance, dudes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. My first was a Visionnaire but I tend to use mostly lammy Safari or the pilot metropolitan now. Although I keep going back to my first.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My first fountain pen was a Waterman of Paris Laureat I given to me by my best friend, she had two of them and thought I should dive into the fountain pen world...and dive in, I did! (IG id is nevadaselkie)

  39. First fountain pen was a platinum Preppy, I gave it to my sister since I had my copper Bolt to use. My favorite fountain pen that I own is my Noodler's Nib Creaper pen with Rome Burning (an amazing gold with purple ink). I have been daily using it for the past two days and I love it. I would love to have an INK and I can't wait until they are re-released! I actually want to get one for my friend so if I could have one too that would be the most amazing thing ever!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The cheap pilot fountain pen with the extra fine nib is my current favorite. My first was a Lamy safari.

    ReplyDelete
  41. My first FP was a Lamy Safari. After many years of FPing, it is still in heavy rotation and daily us. But, my favorite is the Pilot Matte Black Vanishing Point. Such a well designed, well built, easy to deploy, and smooth writing pen.

  50. Fav pen besides Franklin-Christoph is the Kcavers minty mint!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can tell you about my beginning and where I'm at now! I started with the rebranded preppy that came with a bottle of Noodler's Heart of Darkness, and that got me hooked. My current favorite is a toss up between my Faber Castell Basic Black and my TWSBI 580 Al in orange, which I just got in!

    ReplyDelete
  52. My first fountain pen was a handed down Montblanc, but my passion has to be in the craftsmanship behind the Karas Kustoms, I'd love to expand the collection!

    ReplyDelete
  53. My first till now only fontain pens have been school types, my last one was a Pelikan, and I still use it, but I really want this one.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My first fountain pen was a Parker Vector. I still have it after many years and since it started me down the fountain pen path, I'll never get rid of it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My first fountain pen was a Preppy. Thanks for the chance.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My first fountain pen will hopefully be the one I would win. I currently have 4 KARAS pens and love them all. Let's make this #5!

    ReplyDelete
  57. My first fountain pen was a Diplomat, purchased from a gift shop in the early 90s with no clue what was up. Rebooted FP life a year ago, buying a Safari and almost immediately a KK Ink. That Ink is in constant use, with a F-C nib.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My first fountain pen was a Pilot Metropolitan. Still a great pen, in my opinion. My new favorite pen, though, is my Karas Kustoms Arizona edition Ink... ;) ;)

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favorite pen in my current collection is the venerable Lamy 2000. It's such a great combination of size, weight, balance, and aesthetic design. I have an Ink 1.0 that is tied for second favorite in my collection, along with my Edison Collier.

Thanks for the opportunity to win, I can't wait to try the Ink 2.0 and will be obtaining one whether it's through this giveaway or not!

    ReplyDelete
  60. My first fountain pen was a Petit and I was amazed at how smooth such an inexpensive pen is. I want to get a nicer one next. I love the feel of my Render K so the Fountain K is very appealing but now with the changes to the Ink Im on the fence once again!

    ReplyDelete
  61. My first fountain pen is a Sheaffer Imperial Triumph that I got as a graduation gift or something like it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just started my fountain pen collection at the SF Pen Show in August, and my first purchase was a Wahl Eversharp skyline. I love this pen, it is beautiful, a piece of art, truly...and now I am pen obsessed...I want to know about every kind of pen, vintage and modern. What makes them special, how do they write, who designed them and why. So glad there is an official day to celebrate.

  64. First fountain pen was a charcoal Lamy Safari (unfortunately it started leaking) and while favorite is a tough decision, since I got my Fountain K it has never not been inked up which isn't true for any other pen I own. Really looking forward to the Ink 2.0!

    ReplyDelete
  67. My favorite fountain pen is a tie between my Omas Ogiva Alba in Violet and my Limited Edition Pilot Custom 74 w/ a Butter Line Stub Grind. I love the flex and the wetness of the former pen and the Line variation and smoothness of the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My favourite fountain pen is my Lamy 2000. It isnt necessarily my favourite to use, the most impressive or the prettiest, it is very good in all of these categories but it is even better on a sentimental level. This pen was my 21st birthday present and so it is very important to me.

My first fountain pen like most people was a Lamy Safari, I bought the vista as I liked the clear design and an extra fine nib as I always used pens that had fine tips to them. I was not disappointed and soon bought my first twsbi, Parker and kickstarter pen in quick succession. I am truly an addict know and know as the pen guy by everyone I know!

    ReplyDelete
  69. My first fountain pen was a Sears pen I bought at a flea market. It used Shaeffer cartridges and had a hooded nib. All-in-all a pretty cheap pen, but it got my curiosity going!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Ooh, nice. Can't wait for the titanium version.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Go Sun Devils!

My first fountain pen was a Shaeffer Calligraphy set, followed by a Parker Vector, and a Shaeffer Prelude. I used the Calligraphy pen as a daily writer for a while, and I've been wanting all CIs all the time ever since.

  80. My first fountain pen was a fine nib Pilot Metropolitan. It took me a lot longer than it should have to realize that I didn't need to use cartridges with it. I still enjoy the Metro, but it is not my favorite. At the moment, my favorite fountain pen is my Lamy 2000 with an extra-fine nib.

    ReplyDelete
  81. My first fountain pen was a Pelikan, I don't remember the name of it, but it was plastic white, with lovely color stripes. That was when I was like 12-14 YO, now that I am back in the FP world, my first one was a Inoxcrom Nature, which I still use.

    ReplyDelete
  82. My first fountain pen was a tumbled INK, my favorite and EDC is a copper fountain K. I cannot write with anything else now.

    ReplyDelete
  83. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Safari (yellow) I picked in the 1980's up at a stationery shop in a mall; because I liked the looks and the price was modest.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I have no fountain pen, so my favorite will most likely be the ink.2, since that will be my first. Maybe I'll win it, maybe I'll buy it. Thus has been a slow process from ballpoint to rollerball and now logically a fountain pen. All karas customs of course...

  89. My first fountain pen was a Parker, given to me by my father. Very likely as a Christmas gift. My favorite fountain pen is the TWSBI Diamond 580. It's the right weight and size for me and writes cleanly. Use it almost every day

  91. My first fountain pen was a gift from Mom. A Parker, not sure of the model, but it strongly resembles a Parker Jotter ballpoint pen. It's cracked between the grip and section threads twice now, and magically healed itself after being left in a drawer for months. I still have that thing. My current favorite is another gift, from my sibling this time, which is a Pelikan 205 "Red".

  116. I was lucky enough to grow up with a father who had a large collection of really nice fountain pens. I was able to use his less expensive ones as a kid. The first one he gave me was a little metal body Parker which I promptly lost. I would really love to win this, but at the same like it would be kinda awesome for one of the commenters who are just getting interested and have not owned a fp to win...

  143. My first fountain pen, disregarding some generic, transparent plastic pen I has as a child, was/is a Nemosine Fission. It has a shiny metal finish, and is nice and heavy. I only have one ink right now, Diamine Bilberry.

  144. My first fountain pen was a Lamy Safari, charcoal black with a fine nib. The nib ended up taking a dive down my sink once when I was cleaning it, but I now own about 10 fountain pens, so let's call it even.

  145. My first: a terrible, very cheap import. Now replaced with a Pilot Metropolitan that I love.

  146. I got my first pen my third year of high school because I was tired of using ball points and wanted something better to take notes. After quite some time of research and debate I ordered my shiny black Lamy Safari. I got some strange looks, but I didn't care. Three pens later my current favorite is a brown Kaweco Sport fitted with a Edison 1.1mm stub because its small size and smoothed nib. Although, I pretty sure that will change once I get my unbranded vintage pen fixed up. It has a 14k warranted nib and it is made from the same material as the Waterman Patrician in the turquoise celluloid.

  147. My first fountain pen was a Caran d'Ache Leman Rhodium. Beautiful pen, still have it, but it's retired to my pen case in honor of extended, honorable service :). My current favorite is a Visconti Homo Sapiens pen that.....

...was either lost or stolen from me this past August :(. I'm still sad about it. Winning this beautiful pen might help though!

  148. My first fountain pen was the Lamy Al-Star in purple. Unfortunately, I lost it on a particularly snowy day on a walk to school. :(

    ReplyDelete
  149. My first "serious" fountain pen is a Parker Premier, which I still use every now and then. The pen that is almost always within arms length is my Sailor KoP with King Eagle nib.

  150. My first FP was a Sheaffer 'school pen' back in grade school. I just got one of those, and the darn thing is a really nice writer.

    ReplyDelete
  151. My first pen was a pilot metropolitan which got me into pens and practicing my writing. My next pen will be the karas fountain k in brass as soon as it is available.

  152. My first pen is my favorite pen so far. I got a pilot metropolitan in medium and it is such a good writer. I haven't looked back since.

  154. I can't choose a favorite, but my first fountain pen was the fantastically awesome (ugly?) Rotring Core. I still love those pens, and I just got another one the other day.
    Thanks for the give-away!

  159. My first fountain pen was a Platinum Preppy 02 (EF) with Blue-Black - I bought a few different sized with wildly inconsistent results - but that convinced me to try a Pilot Metropolitan (Fine) (with EF & Medium Italic nibs to swap in) and that is my current favourite - I have much more to try as I descend this rabbit hole!

  160. My first pen was a Lamy Safari, which I quickly fixed with an italic nib. A coworker of mine got me into fountain pens and showed me the ropes, and I've really enjoyed it as a way of getting back into handwritten correspondence. I really enjoy the variety of inks and the personal note that comes with writing. My current favorite is a Montverde Invincia with a broad nib I got on sale. It just handles so smoothly, looks incredible, and hefts well.

  161. My favorite pen is a Vintage pen I found at the local flea-market. It says "Tornado" on the cap and has a nice flexible nib.

  162. My first pen was a lamy safari, charcoal. My favorite pen has to be the TWSBI Eco with a 1.4 stub nib. I have been waiting for the INKS for months as I follow you and I can't wait!

  163. My favorite fountain pen has got to either be the Parker Vacumatic or the TWSBI Micarta. My first pen however was the Safari Charcoal.

  164. My very first fountain pen was an inexpensive Parker that my father gave me back in the day. I used it through high school but somewhere along the way the nib got smashed. My next favorite pen is that red "Arizona" edition--beautiful!

  165. My first fountain pen was a Stypen Harley Davidson. My mom got it for me when i was in School... i still have it to this day :-)

    ReplyDelete
  166. My very first fountain pen was an old Pelikan (I can't recall the model, too long ago). I don't know where it came from, I might have inherited it. I used it until the day I lost it (that was a very sad day.)

  167. My fav fountain pen is my Tswbi diamond mini, I just love the way it feels, but I'm hankering to get into you guys's fountain pens, I've been worried that I had missed out on the INK but to hear that they just got better! Woo!

  171. What a terrific giveaway, guys. Thanks! My first fountain pen was a pilot petit1. But my favorite is my Lamy cp1. Wait, it's my TWSBI Al Star. No, It's my Pilot Prera. Or...

  172. My favorite pen is the original INK fountain pen. My background is in Mechanical Design Engineering and can appreciate many of the design elements like socket head cap screws, the anodized finish , and the different section materials like copper and brass. The pens remind me of hot rods and the something the machinist I've worked with would make. I've owned Franklin Christoph, Pelikan, Taccia, Conklin, and other fountain pens, but the Ink is my favorite.

I still use pen and paper to sketch Designs and my Art sketches. I use the Render K filled with the hi-tec c refill. The Render K is much easier to use than my Rapidograph technical pens.

  173. My first was a Platinum Preppy. I haven't looked back since that day.

I have been hooked ever since then.

  177. My favorite pen is a custom Aileron made by Herbus Casameerus (if you want to search him...). It's called a Hikou Eiko and is made with a 90 year old flex nib. :)

My first was a Lamy Safari in charcoal, like so many people!

  178. I'm dang excited for the INK 2.0. Got some pen money set aside for one. My first was a Pilot Metro with a fine nib and my current favorite is a TWSBI eco with a 1.1 broad nib.

  179. Awesome! My favorite pen has to be the new omas cocktail in blue o.o its just such a beautiful demonstrator, my first pen was a pilot metropolitain, and i got in because of the /r/fountainpens subreddit where there were so many people praising them and ive come to find out why and i love them too!

  184. My favorite fountain pen is probably the Kaweco Al Sport in polished Chrome. The size make it the ideal EDC fountain pen. The one star leather sleeve makes it a perfect place in your front pocket. The pen always starts immediately even if you haven't used it in a while.

  190. My first fountain pen was a Parker 45, given to me by my parents for my tenth birthday. I have no idea where it is now.

I came back to fountain pens a few years ago as a way of alleviating writer's cramp. I bought a cheap, generic cartridge pen from a big-box stationery chain and fell in love.

It made such a difference that it started a habit. My favourites are now a Jinhao X750 (the sparkly one) and a J. Herbin demonstrator. Still with the inexpensive pens, but I'd love to try something a little more high-end someday.
